Lou Gehrig Burnett is a seasoned veteran of national and local politics.
For 27 years, he worked as a Congressional aide on Capitol Hill in
Washington, D.C. He served 11 years as press secretary for U.S.
Rep. F. Edward Hebert, D-LA and 16 years as chief of staff for U.S. Rep.
Jerry Huckaby, D-LA.
Upon retiring from
the federal government in 1993, Burnett moved to Shreveport where he
worked with the Bossier Press-Tribune and Bossier Post and
wrote a political column which was carried by 14 newspapers in north
Louisiana.
In 1997 and 1998,
he served as executive assistant to Shreveport Mayor Bo Williams.
He is now an
award-winning political columnist for Forum News and publishes
weekly the Fax-Net Update, which gives an interesting
behind-the-scenes look at politics on the local, state and national
level.
He is also a regular panelist
on Time-Warner Cable's Dateline Shreveport television show, a frequent
guest on Tom Pace’s Talk of the
Town Radio Show on SuperTalk 1340 KRMD AM, and the political analyst
for KTAL-TV 6News. Burnett is also a contributing writer for The Bossier Press Tribune.
He is a frequent guest speaker
for various Shreveport civic clubs and organizations. Along with the late
James Q. Wellborn, he founded the Media Lunch Bunch, a group of
journalists who meet every Tuesday at the Cattleman’s Buffet at Boomtown
Casino. It is often attended by officials, potential candidates and other
dignitaries.
In 2002, Burnett's Forum column
was awarded First Place for "Best Continuing Coverage of
Governmental Issues" by the Louisiana Press Association. In 2005, he
was honored with the award for "Best Regular Column."
Burnett, who is
from Houma in south Louisiana, has a master's degree in journalism from
LSU and has been named to Personalities of the South and Who's Who in
American Politics.
